Softball in January isn't possible in many parts of the country, but that's not the case in southern Arizona as two ACCAC schools took advantage of the weather and kicked off their seasons last weekend.
Yavapai got off to a strong start, sweeping a doubleheader from Southern Nevada, 13-5 in six innings and 11-3 in five. In the opener Kamryn Kamakaiwa went 3-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Mia Wickel and Alyssa Carpio both had three hits in the nightcap. Carpio was only a double short of the cycle. Kamakaiwa had another home run and five more RBIs. Head coach Doug Eastman became YC's all-time leader in wins with 227.
Mesa also opened Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the Grand Canyon Club, 9-1 and 12-0, both in five innings.
