ACCAC baseball prepared for its official conference opening next Saturday with a series of non-conference games against league opponents.
A total of 22 non-ACCAC games were played during the week, some involving out-of-area foes. In those games the league went 7-2.
Mesa won its first four games of the year, all against ACCAC teams. The T-Birds swept a doubleheader at Glendale, 3-0 and 8-7. MCC then defeated Phoenix, 11-6, and finished its first week with a 15-5 win in its opening home game over Paradise Valley.
Central Arizona extended its season-opening winning streak to ten games by taking a pair from GateWay, 8-4 and 17-2. Matt Aribal had a pair of hits for CAC in the opener and Tyler Griggs homered. Joaquin Martinez had a double and triple for the Geckos. In game two, Vinnie Lagatta had three hits for the Vaqueros, including a triple and three RBIs. Zack Stewart homered.
Chandler-Gilbert swept its first two games of the season, defeating Paradise Valley, 5-2 and 5-3. For CGCC Nick Cupp-Allen went 3-4 with a double and Riley Pagel homered and drove in two. Danny Marshall had a triple, a homer and two RBIs for the Coyotes in game two, while Tyler McCaughey led the Pumas with a pair of hits.
Yavapai split a non-league doubleheader at Phoenix. In a 6-4 opening-game win, the Roughriders got a two-hit, one home run and three RBI performance from Damone Hale. Phoenix bounced back with a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Pima got its first four games of the season in after having its first three cancelled due to COVID-19. The Aztecs took three of four from Southern Nevada, winning 13-12, 7-4, and 17-9, but falling in the season-opener, 9-8.
Arizona Western split four games with out-of-state opponents. AZW knocked off Community Christian, 12-0, and Southern Idaho, 9-7 in ten innings. In between the Matadors dropped two to Southern Nevada, 11-2 and 8-5. All games were played in Henderson, Nev.
In addition, Cochise took three of four from Eastern Utah, winning 6-2, 10-8 and 3-2 before dropping the last game of the series. 10-9.
After one more round of non-conference action, a full slate of ACCAC contests, is set for Saturday, Feb. 27.
