No.1 ranked Central Arizona continues to roll in ACCAC baseball

As the ACCAC baseball season approaches the halfway point, No. 1-ranked Central Arizona continues to roll along with a 28-0 overall record and 18-0 conference mark.

The Vaqueros picked up four more wins with doubleheader sweeps of South Mountain and Chandler-Gilbert and hold a five-game lead over its closest challenger, Pima.

Central began last week with two wins over SMCC, 12-2 (5) and 7-1. An eight-run third inning propelled CAC to the win in the first contest. Preston Godfrey had a three-hit, three-RBI game while J.D. McLaughlin had two hits, one a homer, and two RBIs and Devon Dixon and two hits and knocked in a pair. Brice Martinez had two singles for the Cougars. In game two, CAC started quickly with four runs in the first. Dixon had two more hits, including a home run, and drove in four. Martinez had another pair of hits for South Mountain.

Chandler-Gilbert gave the Vaqueros a scare in the opener of that twin bill, with Central winning, 5-4. Seven different CAC players all had a hit apiece. In the nightcap, Central got home runs from Godfrey, McLaughlin and Matt Aribal and cruised to a 14-7 victory. Aribal drove in four and McLaughlin three.

Pima has slipped into second place on the heels of a ten-game winning streak which ran its ACCAC record to 13-5. Overall, the Aztecs are 20-6. Two of their wins last week were non-conference over Community Christian, 9-1 and 13-3. PCC also had conference triumphs over Paradise Valley, 10-1 and 15-1.

Glendale is third at 12-6 and 15-12 in all games. The Gauchos topped Phoenix twice, 3-2 and 10-3, and then split with South Mountain, taking the opener, 3-1, before falling in the second game, 5-2. GCC got a two-hit, three-RBI performance from Brock Johnson in the first game while PC was led by Ramces Urias with two hits and a pair of runs driven in. In the second game, Johnson was 2-3 with three more knocked in while Urias duplicated his first game numbers.
