The No. 4 seeded Central Arizona College baseball team completed an improbable postseason run over the weekend, rallying from a seven-run deficit in the championship game to capture the NJCAA Region I Division I Baseball Championship.
The Vaqueros entered the tournament as the fourth seed and opened postseason play against ACCAC Champion and No. 1 seed College of Southern Nevada. CAC's offense exploded early and often as Chris Parkin, Ty Silva and Kamden Lanphere each homered in a high-scoring 15-10 victory over the Coyotes.
Central Arizona carried that momentum into the semifinal round against No. 3 seed Arizona Western College, which had advanced after defeating No. 2 seed Cochise College. The Vaqueros dominated from the start, earning a 13-3 run-rule victory in seven innings. Parkin and Silva again powered the offense with home runs as CAC secured a spot in the championship round.
On Saturday, the Vaqueros had their first chance to clinch the region title against Cochise College but came up short in a 10-5 loss. The Apaches used a four-run fifth inning to pull away and force a winner-take-all rematch on Sunday.
In the decisive championship game, Cochise struck quickly, building a 7-0 lead by the second inning. Central Arizona responded by locking down defensively and slowly chipping away at the deficit. The Vaqueros plated four runs through the first five innings before delivering a massive 10-run seventh inning to completely swing the game and overpower the Apaches en route to the Region I championship.
Chris Parkin was named Tournament MVP following a standout postseason performance at the plate as the Vaqueros completed one of the most impressive tournament runs of the year.
Central Arizona now advances to the NJCAA West Districts next week with a berth to the NJCAA Division I World Series on the line.
