OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Glendale grabbed a share of the WSFL lead with a 32-21 win over New Mexico Military on Saturday. Sophomore Roland Genesy was a big factor in the win as the tailback from Millington Central High School in Tennessee ran for 173 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown. Genesy, 5’11” and 225 pounds, also led the Gauchos with five receptions, picking up 47 yards and another touchdown.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Freshman Wesley Payne was everywhere on defense Saturday night as Mesa downed Pima 36-20. The 5’11”, 200-pound linebacker from Phoenix’s Mountain Pointe High School racked up 20 tackles, including eight solo, and for good measure also picked off a pass and had a break-up. Payne played a huge part in shutting out Pima’s high powered offense in the first half after the Aztecs had scored 34 points in the first half of their game the week before.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – There is no more exciting overtime format in sports than the one used in collegiate football, and Arizona Western placekicker Edgar Gastelum showed why as he hit the game winner to give the Matadors a 27-24 win over Eastern Arizona. Add to that the fact that Gastelum, 6’1”, 215 pounds, was playing before his hometown crowd and it was a truly exciting night for the freshman from Yuma as he gave his team a share of the WSFL lead. The freshman kicker hit both field goals he attempted on the night, including the 40-yard game winner, and was three for three on extra points.
