OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Scottsdale’s offensive
fireworks were displayed in a 63-16 win over a tough New Mexico
Military team on Saturday. Sophomore running back Za’Quan
Summers turned in a great individual performance despite his play
being confined to mainly the first half of the game. His six
rushing attempts netted 108 yards and two touchdowns, while his
three receptions went for 27 yards and another score. Summers, a
5’7”, 165 pounder from T.C. Williams High School in
Alexandria, Va., scored once every three times he touched the ball
on offense.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – The Scottsdale defense was led
by linebacker Ryan Henderson (Wakulla High School in Crawforville,
Fla.) as the Artichokes held the Broncos to 16 points. Playing
mainly in the first half, the 5’10”, 230-pound
sophomore had numbers of (take a deep breath now): eight tackles
(six solo), four tackles for loss for 12 yards, one sack for 10
yards, two fumble recoveries (one of which he returned 42 yards for
a touchdown), an interception which he returned for eight yards,
two pass break-ups and a quarterback hurry.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sophomore place
kicker/punter Brian Franklin had another dependable performance on
Saturday as Mesa lost at Eastern Arizona by a score of 31-21. The
5’9”, 146-pound kicker from Dobson High School in Mesa,
who was All-ACCAC last year as both place kicker and punter, averaged 42 yards per kick on four punts while
going perfect on PAT’s after Mesa’s three
scores.
