OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – On a rain soaked night in
Mesa, Austin Apodaca accounted for seven touchdowns and led a
27-point fourth quarter rally for a huge comeback win on
homecoming. In the process the 6’3”, 195-pound
sophomore set the Mesa CC record for most passing touchdowns in a
game with six as he completed 29 of 44 passes for 313 yards and no
interceptions. Apodaca, out of Silver Creek High School in
Longmont, Colo., also rushed for 39 yards on five carries and a
seventh touchdown. Apodaca is fifth in the nation after Week 6 with
18 touchdown passes on the season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – In holding the Pima Aztecs to 13 points on Saturday, the Arizona Western defense was led by sophomore strong safety Paul Magloire who racked up 14 tackles (seven solo, seven assists) including one which went for a 17-yard loss. Magloire, 6’2” and 220 pounds, was everywhere as he recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, broke up two passes and blocked a punt. Magloire hails from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – The Snow College Badgers needed a spark as rain threatened in the first half of their homecoming game against Phoenix. They got it from Thomas Jewell, a 6’0”, 195-pound freshman punter out of Pocatello, Ida. After pinning the Bears inside the 20 on his 52-yard opening punt, Jewell, who is the Badgers’ back-up quarterback, ran six yards on what looked like would be his second punt to revitalize a Snow drive and spark them to a second score and a 21-6 halftime lead. Jewell finished with a 40.7 average on three punts as a torrential rain flooded the second half of Snow’s 42-6 win.
