Kori Stephenson becomes first female to assist coaching a Mesa men's basketball game

Kori Stephenson, Mesa women's head basketball coach, has had many honors and awards over the years, serving as the assistant men's basketball coach Saturday night may well be the most unique.

Called into service by men's head coach Jimmy Herrera when regular assistant coach Lester Neal tested positive for COVID-19, Stephenson became what is certainly the first female assistant in Mesa men's basketball history and quite likely all of team MCC sports. In fact, although such records aren't kept, she may be the first in ACCAC history.

Not only did Stephenson make history, but she helped lead the T-Birds to a 68-58 upset of nearby rival Scottsdale.

When it became apparent that Neal, the only men's assistant coach, would not be available, Herrera says, "He suggested to ask someone from the women's coaching staff.  This was the day before our game.  When I got to school, I asked coach Stephenson if she, or someone else, could be on the bench with me.  She said she woulould figure it out.  The morning of game day, I found out it was her."

Stephenson did a lot more than just occupy a spot on the bench. According to Herrera, "I also appreciated the way she was another voice that echoed a lot of the same things to what we preach and it was well received from our team.  As much as I want to see coach Neal back and healthy, it was a great experience having coach Stephenson on the bench.  I am definitely going to move forward a better coach from this experience."

Stephenson loved the experience. "I was happy to help Jimmy.  It was great game and Jimmy had a great game plan to slow SCC down and the men executed.  The men's team and our team have a good relationship therefore it was normal for the men to use my suggestions and encouragement because at the end of the day we all wanted the same outcome, to beat that team up the 101!"

Even Neal was excited about the experience. "It was awesome seeing coach Stephenson out there passionately yelling (coaching) and talking to the team and giving them guidance," he said.

Athletic Director John Mulhern was present and excited about the turn of events. "This is a great example of two head coaches working together for the benefit of our student-athletes, he said.  "Watching the game you could see that both coaches were on the same page and focused on the goal.  Great teamwork and it showed!

"I have worked with Coach Stephenson for a very long time and she has made an impact at this college from the second she walked onto the campus."

The winningest Mesa women's basketball history is now the only undefeated female assistant on a men's team.
