Yavapai eliminated by No. 1 seed in NJCAA softball; Phoenix' game postponed to Friday

Top-seeded Florida SouthWestern eliminated No.2 Yavapai in a ten-inning thriller, 10-9, at the NJCAA Division I Softball Championship Thursday. That came just after YC had knocked off the No. 4 seed, Seminole State (OK). It ends the Roughriders' season at 57-6.

In the Division II tournament, Phoenix' game with seventh-seeded Kirkwood has been postponed to Friday at 1 p.m. Arizona time. The tournament is being played in rain-plagued Oxford, Ala.

Rain was no problem in Yuma, AZ, where the Division I event is being played.

FSW (52-6) won the game on a home run by Laura Vigna as the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the tenth. The Bucs had scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extras. Neither team was able to score in the first two extra frames.

YC got three hits from Jasmine Moreno, as well as two each by Mia Weckel, Kayla Rodgers and Makena Riggs. One of Riggs' hits was a home run and pitcher Emily Darwin also went deep.

The Roughriders used lucky No. 7 in their win over Seminole State. Yavapai scored seven runs in the first two innings and then ended the game with seven more in the fifth.

The YC bats, which had been fairly quiet earlier in the tournament, broke out with 13 hits including two each by Mia Weckel, Kayle Rodgers, Yaya Kaaialli and Lovey Kepa'a. Both of Kaaialli's were home runs and Kepa'a and Rodgers had one each.
