Central Arizona, Mesa, 1-2 as women's basketball play resumes

  Fifth-ranked Central Arizona started 2020 with a conference win to stay unbeaten in the ACCAC, and Mesa scored a victory over Pima to remain in second place, as league women's basketball play resumed following the holiday break.

  CAC (12-3, 7-0) took down Chandler-Gilbert at home, 88-60, to remain the only unbeaten team in the conference. Avanna Clark dropped in 31 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Vaqueras, while Makayla Pippin added 17 and Denali Hughes 12. CGCC is now 8-6 and 4-3.

  Mesa (9-5, 6-1) broke open a 30-30 halftime tie to take down arch-rival Pima, 64-49. Janelle Barkey came off the bench to lead the way with 16 points, while Zyan Smith, Jayla Johnson and Jacey Salabiye all had 13. The Aztecs (10-4, 4-3) were paced by Aliyah Ortiz with 12 and Hallie Lawson with ten.

  Phoenix (5-10, 5-2) is just two games back in third place following a 75-69 road win at Eastern Arizona. Danja Stafford paced EAC (11-4, 4-3) with 29 points and 20 rebounds.

  Phoenix, Pima and Eastern Arizona are all bunched at 4-3 in league play, along with Cochise. The 12-3 Apaches began the new decade of ACCAC play with a 69-49 win at Tohono O'odham. Raena Suggs paced CC with 19 points and Sharmayne Finley added 14. A'yonna Wilson scored 18 for the Jegos.
